British Council

The British Council is an international charitable organisation from the United Kingdom  that has a presence in many countries. The British Council is registered as a charity in England, Wales and Scotland.  Originally, established as the ‘British Committee for Relations with Other Countries’ in 1934, when it was realized that it was important to promote the interests of the United Kingdom by creating cultural and educational associations with other countries.  The British Council was bestowed a royal charter by King George VI in 1934 , thus this renowned institution has been functioning for more than 75 years.

It promotes and helps to build cultural and educational relationships with countries where it has a presence and also create awareness of the progressive and creative thinking of the British and their successes in various fields. Sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the Govt. of UK, it is an autonomous body and performs its operations without any outside interference. The present Chief Executive of the British Council is Martin Davidson who is an expert in the field of cultural and public diplomacy among others. The headquarters of British Council are situated in Spring Gardens, Whitehall,  London, UK.  In the United Kingdom British Councilhave offices in Belfast in Ireland, Cardiff in Wales, Manchester in England and Edinburgh in Scotland.

The British Council has presence in over 110 countries in 233 cities and towns. The India chapter of the organization,British Council India has offices in many Indian Cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chandigarh. This network of offices and libraries makes British Council India very popular amongst English readers and the youth who visit to get information regarding the various programmes that are conducted by British Council India and also to be informed about education facilities in UK .

The services offered by British Council India include Teaching; English language related courses, access for the public to get information and enquiry, huge library of English books, Examination Services; passing IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is required for admission in some universities abroad and also mandatory for immigration to English speaking countries such as UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc.  Other English language exams include Cambridge University’s Business English Certificate or Business Language testing System.
